It is found that more than 40% of people in Canada fear dentists. Yes, going to the dentist is a scary task, but if dental care is neglected, then the aftermath can often turn out to be scarier. So what should one with dentophobia do? The answer is sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry is an effective practice in which the dentist sends the patient into a calm and relaxed mental state with the help of prescribed sedatives. Sedation dentistry is often recommended to those suffering from a severe fear of dentists as this practice allows them to be on top of their dental health thanks to the use of sedatives.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Below are the following types of dentistry used for various purposes:

  • Inhaled minimal sedation: This is a process where the patient is given nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen and put a mask over your nose. The gas helps relax the patient during the treatment. The degree of sedation you get is at your dentist's discretion, and the gas wears off rapidly. This is the only type of anesthesia that allows you to work following the treatment.

  • Oral sedation: Oral sedation can range from mild to strong, depending on the overall amount provided. You take a tablet for light sedation, which is usually given 90 minutes before your appointment. The medication will make you sleepy, but you will remain aware. To achieve mild sedation, a higher dosage may be used. This is the most prevalent form of anesthetic used in sedation dentistry.

  • Moderate sedation: Moderate oral sedation causes some patients to feel so drowsy that they fall asleep throughout the treatment. A moderate shake is generally enough to wake them up.

Whatever kind of sedation you get, you will almost always require a local anesthetic (numbing drug applied to the area where the dentist is operating in the mouth) to alleviate pain if the treatment is painful.

Don’t Let Fear Get in the Way

On some occasions, we just bear the pain because we are too engrossed with work in our life, and the busy schedule doesn’t allow us to visit a dentist, but the real truth is that many of us are afraid to see a dentist. Going to the dentist is never a joyous occasion as most of us fear seeing a dentist due to some instances in our childhood or a bad memory as a grown-up. Long story short, many of us feel that avoiding a dentist is better than seeing a dentist. But this is far from the truth!

Dental care is of utmost importance simply because our teeth are put into use numerous times a day & they too need to be checked at intervals. The advent of sedation dentistry has given us all the options of going to the dentist without fear. To learn more about sedation dentistry in Calgary, talk to our dentists and dissolve your fear.
