About

Comprehensive Dental Cleaning Services in South Calgary

Routine dental cleaning is paramount to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent plaque build-up, cavities, and gum disease. Some people require only yearly visits, while some people with periodontal (gum) issues may need visits every 3 months. The main goal of dental cleaning is to get rid of plaque and tartar deposits in your mouth that lead to Periodontal (gum) disease and other oral health issues. Chronic Periodontal disease leads to the loss of the supporting bone around the roots of your teeth, leading to loose teeth and tooth loss.

Dental Cleaning Appointment Steps

A typical dental appointment consists of a checkup or assessment followed by a cleaning and biofilm therapy. Your dental professional will look for cavities during your teeth checkup. To discover cavities in between your teeth, your dentist may request that X-rays be taken.

Your teeth will be checked for plaque and tartar during the exam. Plaque is a bacterial coating that is transparent and sticky. It can solidify and form tartar if not cleaned. Brushing and flossing are ineffective in removing the tartar. Plaque and tartar can induce severe diseases if they develop on your teeth. The depth of the gaps between your gums and teeth (called “pockets”) will be measured using a periodontal probe, and any gum recession or tooth mobility will be recorded. We do this once a year to track the health of your gums and the underlying bone.

Periodontal charting is done once per year to evaluate/track the condition of your gums.

Guided Biofilm Therapy

The dental hygienist will begin by applying a special dye to your teeth that highlights Biofilm, a layer of bacterial plaque. This dye helps identify areas you may have missed in your daily oral hygiene routine. Once these spots are revealed, the hygienist will guide you on effectively removing plaque at home, emphasizing that your daily care is even more crucial than our professional cleanings done a few times a year. After this instruction, the hygienist will use a gentle air polishing technique to remove the Biofilm from your teeth comfortably. This polishing cleans and helps protect your teeth from future plaque buildup, keeping them shinier and smoother for longer. In the past, this was done with a coarse paste and a rotating rubber cup (remember how uncomfortable that was?). After polishing, the hygienist will remove any hardened deposits of calculus (tartar) using hand instruments or an ultrasonic scaler, ensuring your teeth are thoroughly cleaned and healthy.

  • Teeth Whitening
One of the most visible signs of aging or a lack of oral care is the discoloration or staining of teeth. Cosmetic dentistry offers teeth whitening solutions that can rejuvenate your smile, making you look younger and more confident.
  • Teeth Alignment and Spacing
Dentistry offers solutions like Invisalign, braces, or veneers to align your teeth perfectly. When your teeth are in proper alignment, they not only look better but are also easier to maintain.
  • Repairing Chips and Cracks
Cosmetic dentistry offers several methods to cover or repair these imperfections, from composite bonding to porcelain veneers. These fixes are often quick and painless but offer long-lasting solutions to improve the look and functionality of your teeth.
  • Gum Reshaping
For those who feel they show too much gum when they smile or have an uneven gum line, cosmetic dentistry offers gum reshaping or contouring procedures. This technique balances the proportion of gum to teeth, enhancing the symmetry and attractiveness of your smile.
  • Filling Gaps
Cosmetic Dentistry can effectively close these gaps using bonding, crowns, or veneers, making your smile more uniform and easier to manage in terms of hygiene.
  • Replacing Missing Teeth
Cosmetic dentistry offers solutions such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures to replace lost teeth, restoring both the beauty and functionality of your smile.
  • Enhanced Oral Health
While the primary focus is on aesthetics, many cosmetic dentistry procedures also offer health benefits. For instance, repairing cracked or chipped teeth prevents underlying issues like gum disease or infections.
  • Improved Self-Esteem and Confidence
The boost in self-esteem and confidence that a better smile brings can significantly impact social interactions, career opportunities, and overall mental well-being.

Advantages of Air Polishing

  • More effective at removing plaque (dental biofilm) than traditional cleaning and prophylaxis methods.

  • More effective at removing surface stains (such as tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco) than traditional cleaning and prophylaxis methods.

  • More comfortable for patients who suffer from sensitive teeth, as the water is heated to 40 degrees Celsius.

  • No need for prophylaxis with a handpiece, rubber cup/brush and gritty paste (remember that?)

  • Greatly reduces the need to use traditional ultrasonic (electric) or hand (manual) instruments during teeth cleaning.

Frequency of Dental Cleanings

People form calculus (tartar) and biofilm on their teeth at different rates. Some people only require yearly cleanings with guided biofilm removal and minimal tartar scaling, whereas others may require an hour of scaling every 3 months. Your dentist and dental hygienist will evaluate your tissue health and modify the timing of your cleanings according to your
