What to Expect With Sedation Dentistry?

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

If you suffer from dental anxiety, having to undergo extensive dental treatment can be very difficult for you. Sedation dentistry can be a good option for patients suffering from generalized anxiety, fear of the dentist, trauma owing to bad experiences in the past or fear of needles and other sharp instruments. It helps avoid trauma as the patient will not have any memory of the dental visit. It also allows the dentist to complete complex treatments in a short period of time. If you are looking for sedation dentistry in Calgary, Bite Dental Works can help. Our dentist will ensure that you are relaxed throughout your dental treatment. Visit us for a regular dental checkup. We also offer dental crowns and porcelain veneers.

There are several different types of sedation techniques, which the dentist uses accordingly based on your overall health. Your medical history and current health conditions (such as hypertension and diabetes) are also considered before proceeding with the treatment. Some of the different sedation techniques are: inhaled analgesia, oral sedation, IV sedation and general anesthesia.

If you suffer from extreme anxiety issues, opt for oral sedation. Oral sedation is administered in the form of a pill or a liquid and can range from minimal to moderate based on the total dose given to you. The pill or the liquid has to be taken an hour before the treatment. Though the pill makes you drowsy, unlike traditional anesthesia, you are not completely unconscious during the procedure. You can respond to the questions asked by the dentist. However, it is unlikely for you to remember the entire procedure once it is completed. A larger dose produces moderate sedation and may cause you to fall asleep. However, you can be awakened just with a gentle shake. Dentists who offer oral sedation undergo training on certain techniques and procedures (such as monitoring heart and oxygen of the patient during the procedure).

Sedatives are widely used while carrying out dental procedures in patients suffering from dental anxiety. One such procedure is the treatment of black triangles using the Bioclear method. Black triangles can be caused by bone loss, gum line recession or movement of the teeth. With the Bioclear method, the dental composite is wrapped around a tooth using special plastic matrices to form a fully functional tooth. As this method uses dental composite, any chip or fracture can be repaired easily. The technique is also inexpensive compared to porcelain veneers or crowns.

Bite Dental Works offers cosmetic dentistry and surgical treatments to clients in Calgary. We provide single appointment porcelain restorations using CEREC technology.
